Dear Shiloh Family,

It was a typical business conference, and it was social hour.  Carrier Corp. had invited hundreds of HVAC companies to Memphis for a tour of the Carrier/Bryant factory and distribution center.  After a long day of touring, meetings, and info sessions, we were being treated to Happy Hour in the Grand Ballroom of the Peabody Hotel, complete with food, fun, drinks and dancing…an event from which I tactfully bowed out.  I made an appearance, drank a soda, and retired to my glorious 5-star room.

Perched on the bed amidst Sunday School literature and sermon prep material, I was startled by a knock on my door.  I opened it to find a skinny, red headed, rough looking guy who stuck out is hand and said, “Hey, are you Daryl?” (I spell it that way to give an indication of the southern drawl and deep south vernacular). He introduced himself as a fellow HVAC dealer from Calhoun, GA, and the ensuing conversation went something like this,

“They told me you wuz a Christian and didn’t go in for them there parties and such.”

I replied, “Well, I am a Christian, and I just chose to spend the evening studying.”

“Yep, I saw your Bible right off when you opened the door.  I don’t go to them parties either; I don’t drank, and I don’t dance with anybody cept my wife. So, that guy from Carrier said I needed to find O’Neal and hang out with him.  Then he handed me this.”

He flashed pearly whites that spread from ear to ear and wielded an American Express card toward me as though it were a Samari sword. The young man’s eyes became marbles; he then leaned slightly forward, stuck out his chin, raised his eyebrows, and retorted, “Dude said we could eat anything, and go anywhere we want to go…Ever been to Graceland?”

In case you haven’t noticed, I hadn’t said a word since the introduction, and that’s pretty much how the rest of the evening played out.  However, it was a wonderful evening.  We hailed a cab, took in the sights of the city, ate the biggest cheeseburger and milkshake in Memphis, and spent the rest of the night checking out the spelling on the grave at Graceland…all on Carrier’s dime.  It was truly the epitome of country-come-to-town.

1 Kings 15:4-5: 4 Nevertheless for David's sake the Lord his God gave him a lamp in Jerusalem, by setting up his son after him and by establishing Jerusalem; 5 because David did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, and had not turned aside from anything that He commanded him all the days of his life, except in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.  NKJV

Now, I’m not implicating that it is wrong to attend social events.  I only knew, for me, it would have reminded me of who I was before Jesus found me, and I surrendered my life to him.  I also felt it was important for my young wife to know she married a man she could trust in any situation. I simply chose to bypass any temptation that had potential to lead me astray…and God rewarded two country boys from Georgia with sights of the big city.

We are learning to follow Jesus.  The path is not always bright, and the answers are seldom black and white.  However, in the words of a great man, “It’s not hard to do the right thing.”  When you’re not sure about a decision, why not lean toward the purest side, and make choices that lead away from worldly temptation. The small choices we make on earth may lead others to enjoy the lights and blessings of the heavenly city.

Psalm 37:16-18: 16 A little that a righteous man has Is better than the riches of many wicked.  17 For the arms of the wicked shall be broken, But the Lord upholds the righteous. 18 The Lord knows the days of the upright, And their inheritance shall be forever. NKJV

It's usually the small daily investments that pay long-term dividends.

God bless you all,

Pastor Derrell
