Dear Shiloh Family,

One of the perks of being a Granddad is boasting (crowing) about how much my grandbabies love their Poppy.  Fortunately, my two youngest grandsons have not outgrown the fear of expressing those emotions that prove my theory of grand-paternal love.

Recently, both of the little guys, at different occasions, broke and warmed Poppy’s heart.  The first event happened at AWANA when I drew the short straw and had to take Jace to the Nursery.  The closer we got to the half-door, the tighter his grip became on my neck.  When I tried to put him on the floor, he began to whimper and softly call my name, “Poppy.” A trip around the room on the riding firetruck, and I was able to slip out the door.

The next gut-wrench came when Anita and I dropped Caroline and Luke off at the daycare.  From the time I removed the little chunk of love from his car seat, he laid his head on my shoulder and placed his arm around my neck.  Each step educated me to the fact that this wasn’t going to end well.  I’m pretty smart like that sometimes.  Immediately upon entering the building, those sweet ladies began, “Oh, Ahh, do you love Grandpa?  Who is this?”

At which time my man raised his head slightly, grinned, and lovingly replied, “Poppi.”

He then assumed the position, the ladies oohed and aahed all the more, and the dagger in my chest twisted even deeper.

As I handed him to the teacher, he confirmed that the daycare workers were in fact prophets.  Tears flowed immediately, both hands reached for me, and everyone in the building knew I was there, because they all clearly heard, “Poppi, Poppi, Poppi…”

In both cases, I was torn between the pride of being loved, and the torment of leaving them.  However, I knew that they would soon be happier with their peers, playing with toys, and joining in the day’s festivities.  Consequently, one peak around the corner inserted the proverbial pin that popped my inflated ego.  It is amazing how quickly a red firetruck and Buzz Lightyear can replace Poppy.

Romans 8:14-17:  For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, "Abba, Father." 16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,  NKJV

I’m reminded of how my Heavenly Father places me in unpleasant situations.  He loves and wants me to call His name.  However, he also knows the current placement is better for my future happiness and benefit.  Even though it must break his heart to watch us suffer temporarily, he sees the entire picture, and he knows the outcome.

Romans 8:18: 18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. NKJV

On a side note, I feel compelled to address church needs.  I don’t say much about tithing/giving because you are such a gracious body of believers.  However, we have the largest budget in our church history.  Consequently, we have more ministries and the needs that go with them.  Therefore, I must encourage everyone to pray about weekly tithing and other generous contributions.  The church is not a business, but even a body needs nourishment.  God bless you in all that you do for the kingdom.

He certainly knows my name, but He desires that I call on His.

God bless you all,

Pastor Derrell
