Dear Shiloh Family, Its Fall, and in the South, fall means football, and football is in the air. Im not talking about Saturday TV football; I mean real football. Im referring to the games that are played on recreational fields in small cities, towns, and communities. Recently, I observed a typical contest in which the players performed in predictable, almost scripted form. The two midget-league teams spent most of the game in a cloud of dust between the 45-yard-lines, and resembled a wad of automated piglets randomly scurrying around bumping into each other until they eventually found the actual pigskin. It was their first experience of tackle football, and for some, it was their first game ever. This scene played out eternally until one little guy found freedom. The 7-yr-old running back broke through the left side of the line, cut to the outside and streaked for the goal line. There was nothing between him and his first score but fresh air. The sidelines erupted in a cacophony of cheers and instruction. Mom and Dad were ecstatic, Grandma and Grandpa became young again, and the coaches, hands in the air, were already celebrating touchdown. Then the unthinkable happened. The soon-to-be superstar slowed down and looked back as if to say, Hey, isnt someone supposed to tackle me? Little dude was virtually running backwards. He wasnt showing off, he wasnt taunting, he just didnt know what to do. He had never been there before. He was so accustomed to being knocked around, he just expected to be brought to the ground. He was tackled on the 2-yard-line. Dont be too quick to judge the young athlete. We often do the same thing as followers of Jesus. The apostle Paul spoke of it in his letter to the Philippian believers. Philippians 3:13-14: 13 Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, 14 I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. NKJV He encouraged them to avoid getting caught up in the here and now, and dwelling in the past. The goal was to know the calling of God and appreciate how a relationship with Jesus would continually move us closer to that divine calling and purpose. Shiloh, I know many of you are bruised and battered from the daily grind. It seems that progress is difficult to identify and the goal-line is a distant dream. However, the Lord is giving us signs of breakaway freedom in Jesus. Souls are being birthed into the kingdom. Ministries are springing up from the barren soil of despair. God is sending showers of blessings that water the seeds that you, my brothers and sisters are planting. Dont give up, dont give in, and dont quit. Your success is not based on the worlds standards. Your calling is a high calling, and your prize is not of this world. More importantly, you are not striving in your own efforts. The creator of all things lives in you and empowers you to complete what He has begun in you. 1 John 4:4: You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. NKJV God bless you all, |
